PETS FOR YOUR KIDS—WHAT TO GET

Every child wants to start having pets when they are about 2 years old. But what is the best kind to get to start with. Well if you have older children you may have a dog or cat so the younger children will just start with that. But if you are new parents and your 2 year old starts asking for a pet I would suggest starting with a goldfish. They are the easiest pet to have and it is not too expensive to get started.
There are several types of goldfish but you should just start with your basic inexpensive goldfish. You could even start with what is called a feeder fish. This is a very cheap goldfish that is sold in pet stores and they are used to feed snakes.
All you will need to get started with a goldfish is a 1 gallon fish bowl which you can get from Walmart.
Order this bowl from Walmart http://www.walmart.com/cp/Aquariums-Bowls/202101 for $5.97. You will also need to get a chemical called a dechlorinator from the pet store or Walmart. This will take the chlorine out of the water, which is harmful to fish.
Put some small pebbles in the bottom of your bowl (also at Walmart) they will add a little color and make the bowl look pretty. Buy some goldfish flakes and feed the fish twice a day with just 2 or 3 flakes. Overfeeding is the biggest mistake beginners make.
You will need to change the water every 2 days. Fill a container with the new water and let it set for about four or five hours before you put the fish in it. You want the water to be room temperature, and treat it with the dechlorinator while you are letting it get to room temperature.
This is a great way to get started with fish. When you go to an aquarium you have to get a lot of expensive equipment and do a lot of work to keep it clean and keep the fish alive. We had several of these when the kids were old enough and they loved them and worked very hard at keeping everything running but they have to be ready and really have an interest in fish. Or as you know mom and dad will be doing it all.
I will talk more about other types of tanks in the future.
